Edward and Darlene Lowe created the Edward Lowe Foundation in 1985 to "champion the entrepreneurial spirit" as a cornerstone of the free enterprise system.

The foundation does not provide grants, but serves its mission as an operating foundation. Programs are developed to deliver information and educational activities that support second-stage entrepreneurs.

Today, the foundation pursues two goals to fulfill its mission. The first is to help second-stage business owners take their companies to the next level through peer learning in CEO roundtables and Leader Retreats. The second is to encourage wider understanding of the vital role second-stage companies play in the U.S. economy. To achieve this goal, the foundation offers recognition programs that celebrate second-stage companies and conducts research that documents their value.

The headquarters of the Edward Lowe Foundation is located at Big Rock Valley, a property of 2,600 acres of forests, lakes, ponds and streams in southwestern Michigan. More than just a headquarters, Big Rock Valley is a visionary learning center for an assortment of guests, including entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial support organizations. The foundation is also entrusted with the stewardship of the Big Rock Valley Conservancy to preserve its natural resources and historically significant structures and environment.
